By Raj Patel p. 190 "Returning to a trend discussed earlier, many communities are losing their local newspapers. In Carbondale, Colorado, a local rural weekly went out of business in February 2009. A small group of citizens decided to create their own replacement because, in the words of one of its founders, "It just beat the dickens out of sitting around and whining that our paper was dead." Of course, these sorts if volunteer operations struggle for financing, and the paper's collective is looking for any and all kinds of sponsorship. As one member of the local chamber of commerce puts it, "Every town should have a park, a library, and a newspaper." This, of course, suggests where the resources might come from. Parks and libraries are generally not run by foundations or individual sponsors. They're run through public funding, and there's no reason why such important hubs of community engagement shouldn't be supported as they were in the last depression, by public funds." |
