Basalt makes Great 8, Rams sent home

The Basalt High School Longhorns made this week’s Great 8 in the state 3A boys’ basketball tournament with a pair of convincing wins over the weekend. Meanwhile, #2 seed Manitou Springs sent the Roaring Fork Rams home with a 56-54 win on Saturday.

Basalt was seeded #9 in the 32-team tournament and started the weekend with a 62-32 win over University on Friday. The Longhorns kept rolling on Saturday with a 43-30 win over Denver School of Science and Technology in the Sweet 16.

Denver Kent, seeded #1, is next up for Basalt. They face each other at the University of Denver at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9. The winner of that game makes the Final Four at 5:30 p.m. on March 10; the championship game is at 6 p.m. on March 11.

Roaring Fork started the tournament with a hot hand, defeating Denver Manual 73-64 in the first round on March 3. The next day, Manitou Springs jumped out to a 15-8 lead to start the game, but the Rams chipped away for the rest of the game, outscoring Manitou 23-16 in the fourth quarter before falling 56-54.

In other Western Slope League action, Western Slope tournament winner Coal Ridge was tripped up 61-59 by Sterling on Saturday.
