The Sopris Sun publishes each week, 52 weeks a year, thanks to the dedication of our small paid staff, loyal advertisers, and a host of volunteers.

As a community newspaper, The Sun depends on you, our readers, for calendar items, news tips, photos, press releases, stories, feedback and more. Your letters to the editor and opinion columns are another vital way to contribute to the life of this community.  We will be providing additional submission details for each of these categories very soon. For now, here are a few suggestions:

Calendar Events
While you’re welcome to send us events for our print calendar to news@soprissun.com, we’ll also be checking our web calendar for events to print (submitted by Monday at noon either way). Get in both by hovering over the “news” bar and selecting “community calendar”, then clicking the big blue “submit an event” button at the top.

Letters
Email your letters to news@soprissun.com. The deadline for submission is Monday at noon. Please limit your letters to 500 words. We are committed to including all perspectives in The Sopris Sun. If your letter does not appear, it may be because of space limitations in the paper or because other letters we printed expressed the same idea or point of view.  Read more.

Articles and Columns
If you have an idea for an article or column you would like to contribute to The Sun, please check in with our editor by emailing news@soprissun.com.

  • The Sopris Sun focuses on news, features and issues in Carbondale and the surrounding area.
  • In most cases, The Sun will only assign controversial or timely news stories to community writers with journalism experience. Human interest, people features and other features work well for community writers.
  • If you’d like to write a column, let us know the topic, field of interest or idea.
  • Sopris Sun features are typically 500-750 words but they can be longer or shorter.

Photos
The Sopris Sun welcomes photography submissions from the public, both for our print edition of the paper and for this website. Space is limited in the print paper but not online. If we cannot use your photo in print, it may still find a home here.

Press Releases
The Sopris Sun welcomes e-mailed press releases from new and existing businesses and nonprofit organizations. We will take the information you provide and turn it into anything from a freestanding story to a mention in Scuttlebutt. Send press releases to news@soprissun.com.
NOTE: If you include website URLs in your press release, do not assume we will click through to gather additional details. You must provide these in the body of the press release.

News Tips
The Sopris Sun is working to bring you online coverage of breaking news, but we need your help. Keep us informed of traffic, natural disasters, photo ops, and the like by texting or calling 510-0540.
Breaking news tips will be followed up on online according to the best of our abilities.

For more information about any of these submission opportunities, email our editor at news@soprissun.com, or call 510-3003.
Please “like” The Sopris Sun on Facebook. We are also on Twitter and Instagram @soprissun. We’d love to have you join the community conversation.
